INTERVIEW with Joas Nebe conducted by the curators JOSH RYDER and BARBARA SCOTT on the artist´s OPERA SERIAL

“Joas Nebe´s practice ranges in a wide variety of media, including Sculpture, Painting and Video: his exploration of the perceptual mechanisms and their unexpectedly wide consequences on the act of feeling, draws the viewers into the liminal area in which the usual expressive potential of the single media is hybridized into the consistent unity of his work. … One of the most convincing aspects of Nebe´s practice is the way it accomplishes the difficult task of creating a deep synergy between our limbic parameters and our perceptual categories.”

INTERVIEW with Joas Nebe on the history of his CINEMATOGRAPHIC STYLE

“I started creating my visual world by putting some figures on canvas surrounded by a plain color background. This color background was covered with enigmatic „senseless writings“ like the scribbles you can find next to your phone or on the walls of a toilet room. Some writings were combined with line drawings of another figurine that worked like a caricature of the big monsters next to it.”

The artist interview is about the change of style in the artist´s work and how his painting and building light sculptures experience shaped his cinematographic language.

ESSAY by CHARLOTTE LINDENBERG on Joas Nebe´s MACHINE FAIR

“Yet although the imagery is tied to a concrete city, it is not subjected to common perception. Rather than sharing the spectator’s perspective by listing popular sights, Nebe alienates the familiar by picking four scenes consisting of static (architecture) and moving (traffic) elements, in order to fragment, rearrange and precipitate them almost beyond recognition. This blend of a specified and an abstracted site parallels the audio-visual experience of a person not familiar with the sights, sounds and speed of urban life. Overwhelmed by the size of architecture and the dynamics of traffic such a person would hardly be able to focus on individual human beings. Consequently individuals are substituted by dummies – indistinct shapes constituting “just another brick in the wall.” ”

The essay “Machine Fair by Joas Sebastian Nebe” by Charlotte Lindenberg focuses on the overwhelming Machine Fair´s images´s impact on viewer´s perception.

ESSAY on Joas Nebe´s work in general, introducing MACHINE FAIR by REBECCA SCHOENSEE

“Nebe in a clever move takes the reason prisoner, only to appoint reason to be the king of his game of chess. He calls for a close review of the encyclopedia of our philosophical and cultural foundations. In his opinion reason has the potential to direct a path away from the horror vacui he is depicting.”
