The SUPREME SUPERPOWER AMERICAN OPERA

The SUPREME SUPERPOWER AMERICAN OPERA, 42 sec excerpt

All elements of the images- might they make more or less associations to objects, landscape, animals, flowers etc. recognizable in the highly abstracted patterns or not- are compose in relation to the underlaying musical score like steps in a dance.

The footage is taken in different US states shown different parts of the country referring to what Hollywood cinema has told us about how to experience the american way of life and the US lifestyle. Like cinematic language of Hollywood and the importance of motion in american society the film is all about movement and dance.

The NEWS BULLETIN BROADCASTING OPERA

The latest news are celebrated like operas since decades. Expectations are wakened. Hopes and disappointments are celebrated like you are watching a typically Hollywood Cinema movie loaded with all great human feelings- or an Italian opera of the 19th century. Simple images are getting a overwhelming impact by music scoure underlying.

The BATTLESHIP´s LARGER THEN LIFE OPERA

Carnival used to be a free playground for everyone embedded in catholic faith. Especially in Southwest Germany, the Alemannia region, people still play during Fasnet the same old games their ancestors played centuries ago. Analyzing this game you will find out that Fasnet is still the time when religious and ideological theories don ́t have any value to anyone- something which is unknown to islamic or communist ́s traditions.

THE ROOMS SERIAL

Rooms are essential sources for the home-coming feeling everybody developes during life. Our private rooms are filled up with psychological projections, unfilled wishes, hopes and dreams. But there are psychological rooms, too, filled with emotions, expectations, all kind of mental energy, may it be positive or negative.

The Room Project is built up of several video works, mostly one channel. Each work is regarding a profession, a special kind of room (e.g. a stage, a show case, a castles room etc.), intermingled with linguistic meaning of the profession, the room and language itself.

Important aspects of this project is the shifting of perception focus within every single video work of the body of works from the project. Some video works will be named after existing rooms, e.g. in private homes, castles etc.. Other video works will have the title and play with the idea and the connotation of a word, e.g. glass case, Mountainrange, and bring together the linguistic meaning which is important for communication with some associations rooted in the mental and psychological status of a person.

The outcome will be a “big house” consisting of at least 10-20 rooms, each room dedicated to special emotions, professions, or linguistic meanings.

THE GAME SERIAL

THE CAMEL GAME

The Camel Game is a straight copy of the very common game Battleships. Instead of ships camels and dromedaries are used to take the possessed position of the player.

Camels and dromedaries bridge the gap of deserts because both animals are able to cope with water deficiency. The background shows explanations of yachts and the letter J which is connected in common dictionaries to Jackson Hole, the place where the economist ́s elite meet annually in order to discuss the world economies ́progress.

The POSTCARD LOVE series

Postcard images determinate how we see the world. We are traveling in order to see what we expect to see. By following the images of a certain place we have in mind, we limit landscape experience to our imagination fed by cliché.
Postcard Love is composed out of images shot on the lake site of Biel Lake in Switzerland and on Black Forrest mountain sites.

The film footage has been recorded in the US and Europe and altered during post production process.

GIVE MY REGARDS TO THE ALPS
10 channel video installation

The project’s issue is about how perception is influenced by global image prototypes reproduced in different medias, e.g. postcards or tv.

Usually postcards show a bright lightened sujet, the image of a place, anchored in the mind of everyone which has nothing to do with the true environment of mountain nature. Especially mountainscapes of distinction are very often reproduced. A pivotal role for this installation plays the idea what a certain mountain landscape could mean to the hiker or car driver.
The footage for this video collage has been taken at Simplon pass, Black Forest sites and Jura mountain Chasseral in western Switzerland.

The current video installation composes a landscape panorama by screenings on up to ten screens at the same time. Some of the mountainscapes are unchanged, others show a different composition of Mountains and valleys every 30 seconds. The mountain´s panorama changes from late summer impressions of indian summer trees to snowy hills and white peaks.

PARADISE GARDEN + SPA series
multi channel video installation

“The idea behind PARADISE GARDENS + SPA series is to research the meaning of a powerful metaphor. This metaphor exists on a very high level of abstraction and is deeply rooted in our culture. The second aspect i am interested in is the easy-to-sell contemporary item of service industry which you can find in resort and hotel offers regarding spa treatment and which is in fact a profan interpretation of the idea of the garden of Eden.

In Paradise Gardens + Spa the most challenging part was to get rid of the idea that paradise gardens always has to be a garden. I had to learn that i don ́t have to show a French park or English garden if i want to evoke the impression of garden of Eden.”

The TOTEM TOONS

I feel a burning desire to break the spell and to step out into the open to take a deep breath of the fresh salty fall air. As I feel the wind caressing my lungs, I hear Nebe’s “Totems Toons” uttering a faint, sardonic chuckle.

“Totem toons” consist of four video pieces, each connoting a different animal. Nebe uses analogue photographs of abandoned houses on empty street views. Cloud pictures, layered and set into motion are added to the composition. Pairing into doubles, the four pieces work on the theme of mirror stages, and the landscapes of the psyche. The compositional structure of the work leads towards a juxtaposition of alienated outer “corpora” and the bodily inside. As the “totems” emerge during the course of gazing through the polygenic frames, they function as utopian body phantoms and ciphers for tabooed spaces.

The PHILOSOPHICAL CARTOONS

Imagine you´re driving full speed against a wall only to find out that you have just crushed into a some kind of hyper nothingness, waking up in a dystopic scape of shades, in a place in which life has long been obliterated. Well, welcome to the psychic spin of Joas Sebastian Nebe´s “Philosophical Cartoons”.
