ARTiculAction CONTEMPORARY ART REVIEW publishes in it´s 10th edition an interview with the artist about his OPERA Serial work, the PHILOSOPHICAL CARTOONS series and the HOUSE OF SHADES conducted by curator Josh Ryder and Barbara Scott.

“Joas Nebe´s practice ranges in a wide variety of media, including Sculpture, Painting and Video: his exploration of the perceptual mechanisms and their unexpectedly wide consequences on the act of feeling, draws the viewers into the liminal area in which the usual expressive potential of the single media is hybridized into the consistent unity of his work. … One of the most convincing aspects of Nebe´s practice is the way it accomplishes the difficult task of creating a deep synergy between our limbic parameters and our perceptual categories.”

Josh Ryder, curator, and Barbara Scott, curator, in: ARTiculAction meets Joas Nebe, ARTiculAction Contemporary Art Review, special issue, may 2016, pp. 16 – 43

Cormac Weiss Gallery, Berlin, Germany

For this exhibition
Joas Nebe (Hamburg, Germany)
has made a series of paintings, photos, drawings and sculptures. By investigating language on a meta-level, Nebe finds that movement reveals an inherent awkwardness, a humour that echoes our own vulnerabilities.

The artist also considers movement as a metaphor for the ever- seeking man who experiences a continuous loss.
His paintings focus on the inability of communication which is used to visualise reality, the attempt of dialogue, the dissonance between form and content and the dysfunctions of language.

In short, the lack of clear references are key elements in the work. By creating situations and breaking the passivity of the spectator, he tries to grasp language. Transformed into art, language becomes an ornament. At that moment, lots of ambiguities and indistinctnesses, which are inherent to the phenomenon, come to the surface.

His works are based on inspiring situations: visions that reflect a sensation of indisputability and serene contemplation, combined with subtle details of odd or eccentric, humoristic elements. By questioning the concept of movement, he wants the viewer to become a part of the art as part of added component. Art is entertainment: to be able to touch the work as well as to interact with the work is important.

His work isolate the moevements of humans and/or objects. By doing, new sequences created which reveal an inseparable relationship between motion and sound.

M5ARTS ArtSTEET Event
3rd – 25th february 2017
Downtown Sacramento, Texas

M5Arts will present the artist´s The DICTIONARY serial: The PROCRASTINATOR

Dictionaries are made for getting the meaning of a word you don´t know. If you are going to consult them, you are willing to communicate with another person or group but you don´t have a clue how to express a phrase, an idea you have in mind or an impression you want to share. That´s the point when you consult your big, fat dictionary (or you switch on your tablet/smart phone/laptop in order to find out what you are about to say to that other person/group/society/gangster in front of you.

(Ok, in most cases if the person in front of you is holding a gun aiming on your head/kidneys/testicles you won´t have time to consult a dictionary/you don´t have a dictionary at hand.)

http://www.jsnebe.de/film24.html

M5ARTS is a new arts initiative in Downtown Sacramento committed to envisioning and creating culturally significant multi-faceted and multidimensional art experiences.

M5ARTS and the Art Hotel project at the historic Jade Apartments presented a temporary series of arts events, which included exhibitions, salons, lectures, film premieres, book debuts, musical performances, and artist receptions. This multi-media initiative has big hopes to extend its programs to new avenues for years to come, enriching the downtown community and helping define Sacramento’s place in the art world. At M5Arts we don’t support the arts – we support artists.

**POP UP KINO FESTIVAL**
Open Studios December 2016 Guest Videoart Festival

“The aim of the project is to enhance the visibility of video art in the context of the artistic scene of Berlin and to give an opportunity to international artists to show their video creations.”

Invited artists: Joas Nebe // Irene Cruz & Juan Yuste // 451 Productions // Rubén González

Curated by Nati Grund, Ana Sanfrutos and Irene Cruz

Joas Nebe´ LIFE CYCLE No. 2 will be presented.

LIFE CYCLE No. 2

“Life Cycle No. 2″ is a part of a serie consisting of three multi channel video installations, where the artists wants to transmit an idea about evolution. A kind of evolution as a continuous genetic adaption of organisms and species but in a process of mutation. The artist is presenting a disturbed evolution, where the end has nothing to do with the beginning.

One of the most important topic of Joas Nebe is the human being, his communication and his interaction with the world around him, and how the humans are altering that one.

He always says from the beginning of his career as an artist, he was fascinated by art works with a hidden message. And that is what he is doing through his art: in his pieces we will rarely find a human figure although is his main subject in his art work.

Joas Nebe will never tell you directly through his art what he wants to tell you. He will challenge you to reflect. At the same time he will propose a topic that involve everyone, because he is doubting everything that is too much accepted by the majority. He wants to bring the spectator to another level, above the right or the bad thinking. Joas Nebe will just propose an idea and we as a receiver, are responsible to answer ourselves.”

Hotel Europa Expositie Expositieruimte Langestraat 56

ABOUT THE FILM:
The project’s issue is about how perception is influenced by global image prototypes reproduced in different medias, e.g. postcards or tv.

Usually postcards show a bright lightened sujet, the image of a place, anchored in the mind of everyone which has nothing to do with the true environment of mountain nature. Especially mountainscapes of distinction are very often reproduced. A pivotal role for this installation plays the idea what a certain mountain landscape could mean to the hiker or car driver.

PAPAY GYRO NIGHTS 2016 HONG KONG
ART_TECTURE

curator Gabriel Soucheyre/VIDEOFORMES

8th april – 8th may 2016

@ Videotage, Hong Kong

PAPAY GYRO NIGHTS ART FESTIVAL is a multimedia project / video art, sound art, experimental film, music and architecture / exploring place, rituals, folklore and trans-disciplinary interactions. The festival is taking place in two contrasting environments: on the small and remote North Atlantic island Papa Westray (with population only 70 people) and in Hong Kong, and also curating touring programmes which were presented in Iceland, Norway, Serbia, Faroe Islands, Sweden and around the UK
Rather than focus on pure art forms we like to explore the limits, boundaries and in-between spaces where unexpected may take place

2016 theme: ARCHITECTURE – the search for a new vernacular in the age of displacement. Nomadism. Bordercrossing. Invisibility

“Demons are different from gods, bacause gods have fixed attributes, properties and functions, territories and codes: they have to do with rails, boundaries and surveys. What demons do is jump across intervals, and from one interval to another” – Gilles Deleuze

“The flower is beautiful, the cabbage is useful, the poppy makes you crazy. But the grass is overflowing…” – Henry Miller

” FESTIVAL IS A VIRUS” – Ivanov + Chan

The curators have selected the artist´s film PRODCTION PLANT.

“The video work compares the mechanisms of metropolitan perception with mechanisms that make a machine work. Using video images of Berlin cityscape, re- framed and changed during post production brings out an unique aesthetic quality that is neither documentary (the usual visual research format for left wing film makers) nor fictitious (the usual format for entertainment).”

About the film:
The latest news are celebrated like operas since decades. Expectations are wakened. Hopes and disappointments are celebrated like you are watching a typically Hollywood Cinema movie loaded with all great human feelings- or an Italian opera of the 19th century. Simple images are getting a overwhelming impact by music scoure underlying.

THE PROVERB PICTURE PROJECT

The Proverb Picture Project is developed and curated by Joas Sebastian Nebe. Participating artists are from around the world, e.g. US, RSA, Poland, Togo, UK.

“Everyone of us, in some determinated moment, we have been involved in some uncomfortable situation because of communication, or rather not-communication. The most of the times is due to standardization and formalization the language.
From here is where the proverbs and pep talks are coming. They are standard texts that generalize specific cases and situations. These can be very useful in certain situations, but not always, because in each case leaves out a hidden information. These situations are repeated in companies to motivate their own employees, as well as are used in advertising itself or on their websites. On the websites of these companies, their own descriptions are as formal as proverbs and pep talk.
This interesting video art work, curated by Joas Nebe collaborating with other artists, shows a reflection over the standardized communication in all aspects and views from different blocks.” (Anna Corpas Sanya, art historian)
